Aspen, Colorado, USA

It is neither the highest nor the most dramatic winter sports arena in the United States, but Aspen always attracts an ambitious, attractive crowd. St Moritz and Gstaad, Kitzbühel and Zürs, Cortina d’Ampezzo and Megève have always been among the top resorts on the international ski circuit. Now Aspen has joined them. Aspen on the Roaring Fork became a boom town again after half a century in the doldrums following the end of the Colorado Silver Age. There is a holiday feeling in the air which has made the town the winter crossroads of a star-studded élite, from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Jack Nicholson.

Layout and Highlights
There are four mountains to ski around Aspen. Ajax is Aspen’s own; the slopes are the steepest and the company the best, whereas Aspen Highlands is for novices and intermediates. Buttermilk Mountain is ideal for beginners and big-city kids used to chic jogging paths only. Snowmass is the largest of the slopes and the most distant. It’s really a separate resort with two excellent runs: the Big Burn and the death-defying Cabin Jump
